Course Description
This course will help participants learn how to teach Vergil's Aeneid in the Latin classroom, using the Standards for Classical Language Learning. Participants will learn about the Aeneid's role as the epic of Rome's founding and Vergil's place in history. Teachers who are teaching Vergil, teaching the AP Latin syllabus, or those just interested in learning more about Vergil, may find this course useful. Conducted in English.
Course Rationale
The Aeneid allows readers to see how one of the most famous figures in history saw the world and Roman social, political, and aesthetic values at the end of the Roman Republic. Analyzing and interpreting ancient texts can be challenging, particularly those written by a biased narrator who is appealing to a Roman audience to further his own agenda. Participants will study Vergil's work in this course, which is suitable for students in pre-AP classes, capstone classes, or as part of the AP Vergil-Caesar syllabus. The lessons, assignments, discussion topics, and writing prompts can be modified to fit any advanced Latin class at the secondary or university levels. The course will use the revised Standards for Classical Language Learning, the Achievement Level Descriptors, the Essential Questions, and question formats from the AP Latin Course.
Course Objectives
Participants in this course will have the opportunity to:
Learn about the Standards for Classical Language Learning, Standards for Latin Teacher Preparation, and the AP Latin Course and Exam Description.
Understand how the descriptors and sample indicators from the Standards for Classical Language Learning can be applied to teaching Latin poetry.
Understand the question types and essential questions from the AP Latin Course.3
Implement the Standards and Achievement Level Descriptors in their own lessons and assessments.
Develop strategies to help students interpret Latin poetry and relate it to their lives.
Design a unit plan based on a section of Vergil or a theme.
What Participants Are Saying About This Course
"Very good choices of interesting articles that made me look at the text in new ways. There was also a lot to learn from colleagues--I wish we had had more in the class for a longer period of time!"
"Maureen gave good feedback and was very encouraging. She was also very flexible with the class and realized that things come up in our lives. Maureen is very caring and thoughtful! She has a lot of great ideas and is always willing to share them. Maureen is also passionate about the Vergil text and teaching. She must be great with her kids in the classroom!"

Course Description
Latin poetry frequently constitutes a student's first experience with authentic Latin literature. Moving beyond mere translation to the interpretation and analysis of lines of verse can be challenging for students and instructors alike. Participants in this course will read and analyze multiple genres of Latin poetry across several historical periods and through the lens of the Updated Standards for Classical Language Learning. While considering each poem within its historical and cultural context, participants will explore stylistic nuance and contemplate varied interpretations of the text. At the same time, they will develop strategies and techniques for teaching poetry to students. Conducted in English and Latin.

Course Description:
This course will help participants learn how to teach letters in the Latin classroom. Teachers teaching the new AP Latin syllabus or those just interested in learning more about incorporating letters into the Latin classroom may find this course useful. Conducted in English.
Course Rationale
The Letter Writing in Latin course is designed to provide graduate-level Latin students and educators with an in-depth exploration of Latin epistolography, focusing on the linguistic, rhetorical, cultural, and pedagogical significance of letters from the Roman world. By engaging with the letters of Pliny, Cicero, and Cornelia, among others, students will gain insight into how Latin letters functioned as a means of communication, self-presentation, and persuasion in antiquity.
This course bridges classical scholarship and modern pedagogy, equipping educators with strategies to incorporate authentic Latin letters into language instruction at various levels, including the AP Latin curriculum. In addition to studying rhetorical and literary techniques, students will examine how Latin letter writing reflects Roman social structures, ethics, and political thought. The inclusion of modern pedagogical research ensures that participants develop practical applications for teaching epistolography in a way that enhances language acquisition, reading comprehension, and historical analysis.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:
Develop a deep understanding of Latin letters as a genre.
Analyze letters for rhetorical, historical, and linguistic significance.
Explore how letter writing can be integrated into Latin pedagogy to foster student engagement and critical thinking.
Design a teaching unit that incorporates Latin epistolography into a curriculum.

What Participants Are Saying About This Course
“Maureen is great! She is super responsive and was always quick to reply to my questions. Her joy for what she does is clear. This is my first experience taking an online class. I really love its convenience, but feel I am more traditional and prefer an in-person experience. I would have loved even more Maureen time! Given the format, though, she was very present!”

Course Description
When Language teachers discuss literacy, traditionally reading, writing, listening, and speaking are seen as the core aspects of becoming literate in a language. However, those pieces are only a part of the larger mosaic of language literacy in the modern world. Literacy is now defined as an “increasingly collaborative activity, where negotiation, analysis, and awareness of (the) audience are as critical as understanding or creating a message.” In this course, participants will explore the question of what makes someone literate and how to achieve literacy with students at the secondary level. Teachers will come away with strategies, activities, and assessments that they can use immediately in their classes.
