Letter Writing in Latin
Course Description:
This course will help participants learn how to teach letters in the Latin classroom. Teachers teaching the new AP Latin syllabus or those just interested in learning more about incorporating letters into the Latin classroom may find this course useful. Conducted in English.
Course Rationale
The Letter Writing in Latin course is designed to provide graduate-level Latin students and educators with an in-depth exploration of Latin epistolography, focusing on the linguistic, rhetorical, cultural, and pedagogical significance of letters from the Roman world. By engaging with the letters of Pliny, Cicero, and Cornelia, among others, students will gain insight into how Latin letters functioned as a means of communication, self-presentation, and persuasion in antiquity.
This course bridges classical scholarship and modern pedagogy, equipping educators with strategies to incorporate authentic Latin letters into language instruction at various levels, including the AP Latin curriculum. In addition to studying rhetorical and literary techniques, students will examine how Latin letter writing reflects Roman social structures, ethics, and political thought. The inclusion of modern pedagogical research ensures that participants develop practical applications for teaching epistolography in a way that enhances language acquisition, reading comprehension, and historical analysis.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:
Develop a deep understanding of Latin letters as a genre.
Analyze letters for rhetorical, historical, and linguistic significance.
Explore how letter writing can be integrated into Latin pedagogy to foster student engagement and critical thinking.
Design a teaching unit that incorporates Latin epistolography into a curriculum.
