Course Description
This professional development course is designed for Chinese teachers who are looking to incorporate traditional Chinese culture into their language classes. By exploring the rich cultural heritage of China through idioms, fairy tales, and folktales, teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the language and its origins, while also providing students with an engaging and interactive learning experience.
In this course, teachers will learn how to effectively use idioms, fairy tales, and folktales as teaching tools in their classrooms. Topics covered include:
Understanding the cultural significance and meaning behind Chinese idioms
How to effectively use idioms in language lessons to improve vocabulary and comprehension skills
An overview of the most popular fairytales and folktales in Chinese culture
Techniques for retelling and adapting these stories for the classroom
Strategies for encouraging students to think critically about the cultural values and themes inherent in these stories.

By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

Course Description
Integrated performance-based assessments are a key component of any proficiency-based program. This course will give an overview of various assessments, provide a step-by-step process to design a Mandarin curriculum based on integrated performance assessments, and share resources including rubrics, templates, authentic resources, and sample assessments to empower attendees to develop their own curriculum. Conducted in Mandarin Chinese.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:
Assess the abilities of students in all three modes of communication more effectively using real-world tasks.
Help students make progress toward the Intermediate or Advanced proficiency levels as defined in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
Plan and implement one or more new strategies to increase students’ language production in all three communication modes.
Assess the interpretive mode via culturally authentic resources and reflect on how to make them relevant for different students.
Identify the characteristics of effective performance tasks, and the use of rubrics for providing feedback that will improve student performance.
Implement “teaching grammar in context” in your curriculum.
Use backward design to create or adjust to a Standards-Based Integrated Performance Assessment Unit

Course Description
The primary focus of this course is developing professional and program sustainability through the incorporation of effective and engaging learner-centered educational technology in Mandarin classroom. Participants will reshape an existing lesson, or build a new one, to include these tools to enhance your teaching and your students’ learning. Activities include readings and videos, with periods for discussion and reflection. Using Backwards Design theory and a constructive approach, you will design a lesson plan that supports the curriculum frameworks/standards. Conducted in Mandarin Chinese.
