Novice-level Novels to Enhance Communication in the Italian Classroom

from $590.00

Course Description

For communication in L2 to exist, students need something to talk about. Reading short novels crafted especially for the novice learner not only provides characters and a plot, but also the feeling of accomplishment once the novel has been read. In this course, we will discuss the theory of comprehensible input and then go on to use the theory while exploring how to reach novice learners through five novice-level novels in Italian: L’Amore di Francesca, Mi Diverto con Gianluigi, Il Signor Rigoni, Le Avventure di Pinocchio e Il Mistero di Casanova. We will learn how to incorporate what is already embedded in the novel to further pique students' interest and get the most out of the reading, including culture, geography, food, social issues and even politics.  Within each module, participants will examine the online content, read the books, engage in discussion, prepare and share activities for use in the classroom. The course is a forum to collaborate, share ideas and best practices for involving the comprehensible novel in the novice-level classroom. The final project will include a Unit Lesson Plan that incorporates all 5 short novels. Conducted in Italian.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

  1. Understand Comprehensible Input and how it fosters communication

  2. Learn how to read a short story in Italian for novice and intermediate learners

  3. Learn strategies on how to present Italian Grammar in Context

  4. How to teach culture through authentic comprehensible literature

  5. Design a unit plan for their own classes incorporating the theory and practice of this course as well as the material from the 5 short stories.
