Joseph Parodi-Brown, Ed.D.
Spanish & Social Justice Instructor
Dr. Joseph Parodi-Brown is the Chair of Modern Languages at Marianapolis Preparatory School, where he has taught since 2006. He has taught all levels of Spanish, including a Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures course and a Spanish conversation course, which he developed. Joseph holds an Honors AB in Spanish Language and Literature from Saint Anselm College and an Inter-University MA in Modern Languages from Central Connecticut State University and Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. He completed his doctoral degree Ed.D. at Creighton University in May, 2019, with his dissertation Being LGBT in a Catholic High School: Understanding Students’ Lived Experience to Influence School Leadership Practice. As an educational practitioner, Joseph is focused on teaching toward proficiency in his classrooms, so that students will be able to use their language to engage with other cultures and to work for justice in the world.

Course Description
This course is designed to help language educators discover the resources available and develop the skills necessary to integrate a social justice perspective into their language courses at all levels. By considering best practices, educators will strengthen their ability to plan units that will target both language learning objectives and social justice learning objectives. Utilizing the concepts of Understanding by Design, publications from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) specific to language unit planning and curricular development, and the principles of social justice education, participants in this course will discuss the reasons for adding a social justice basis to their language courses and work through the steps necessary to effectively plan lessons and units with such a perspective in mind. Through weekly discussions with classmates and the instructor, readings and resources reflecting best language teaching practices, and scaffolded assignments, course participants will develop a unit that integrates language learning outcomes and social justice learning outcomes. Course Description
The theater has been a genre in which Spanish writers have excelled, evolving the platform, creating globally recognized characters, and receiving international renown. This course examines masterpieces of the Spanish theater from the Siglo de Oro to the Post-Franco democratic age. Examining works by five of the most important dramatists of Spain’s history, course participants will engage with the social commentary and metaliterary aspects of these works from giants of the Spanish theater. Students will also select a work from the Spanish theater tradition to serve as the focal point of a lesson that they create for their classrooms. Conducted in Spanish.
