Novice & Intermediate French Courses

Based on the ACTFL proficiency model, our courses are broken into the following levels:

• Novice 1: Novice Low - Novice Mid (Level 1)

At the beginning novice level, students are being introduced to the target language and culture. By the end of the semester they will be able to use some words, phrases, and occasional sentences for common objects and actions with repetition. They will also be able to recognize some cultural places, products and practices. They will be able to understand some simple questions and statements, often needing to hear things again. Course topics vary slightly by language, but are all culturally based through authentic resources and can include greetings, expressing likes and dislikes, simple food etiquette and describing oneself and others. 

• Novice 2: Novice Mid - Novice High (Level 2)

At the middle novice level, students are exploring the target language and culture in terms of everyday life. By the end of the semester they will be able to use familiar words and phrases and even begin to elaborate on familiar tasks, topics and activities. They will also be able to put together short, simple original sentences in the present tense and begin to give their opinion about some cultural products and practices. Course topics vary slightly by language, but are all culturally based through authentic resources and can include greetings and getting to know each other, celebrations, using technology and daily life experiences including routine and school. 

• Intermediate 1: Intermediate Low - Intermediate Mid (Level 3 - 4)

At the intermediate level, students are creating with the target language and are able to understand questions and statements from real life situations. By the end of the semester, they will be able to use words and expressions from a wide range of topics and begin to expand and give details on familiar topics. They will be able to use strings of simple sentences and connect ideas to describe and explain, and they will begin to use different tenses. They will also be able to compare cultural products, practices and perspectives of the target culture with their own. Course topics vary slightly by language, but are all culturally based through authentic resources and can include talking about self and community, food and restaurant etiquette, responsible global citizenship and music as a part of culture.

• Intermediate 2: Intermediate High - Advanced Low (Level 4 - AP Prep)

At the intermediate high to advanced low level, students are telling stories, debating opinions and ideas, and experiencing the target language and culture with deep understanding and connection. By the end of the semester, students will be able to communicate ideas on a wide range of topics and use culturally appropriate idiomatic expressions. They will be able to communicate in clear and organized paragraph length to narrate in all major time frames. They will also be able to compare their own community with the target culture that includes supporting details and relevant examples. Course topics vary slightly by language, but are all culturally based through authentic resources and can include immigration and social issues, effects of technology, history and art. 

• Post-AP French Language & Culture: Intermediate High - Advanced Low+ (Post-AP Topics)
