ENL Instructor

Bency Pierre is a passionate educator with over a decade of teaching experience in New York State. Throughout his career, he has taught a wide range of content areas, including World Languages, English, Social Studies, and ENL. As a multilingual, first-generation Haitian American, he is deeply committed to finding effective ways to support English Learners and to helping fellow educators implement practical, classroom-ready strategies. He firmly believes that the impact educators can have on this often underserved population is well worth the effort.

A lifelong learner, Bency continually seeks innovative approaches to advance the art of teaching and deepen student engagement. He recognizes that classrooms—and student needs—are constantly evolving, and he strives to serve as a bridge for his peers as they grow and adapt alongside their students. His courses focus on supporting teachers transitioning into the field of ENL, as well as content-area educators at the secondary level who face the added challenge of state assessments alongside language development.

NEW COURSE for Summer 2026: July 6 - August 14

Course Description

At the Secondary Level, there is an emphasis on summative assessment in order to move towards graduation requirements. For many content area teachers, or English as a New Language (ENL) teachers who are co-teaching in these classrooms, there is an increased challenge to provide equity in instruction while supplementing for gaps in language and background knowledge. There is also an issue with pacing to cover required curriculum that will be part of these high-stakes summative assessments. Within each module, participants will examine the principles and methodologies behind some practical strategies for supporting ELLs in core content areas. In addition, we will introduce various tech tools and some key components that will support our students in content learning and language inquisition. Conducted in English for all secondary teachers including teachers of English Language Learners (ELL), English Learners (EL), English as a New Language (ENL), English as a Second Language (ESL) and Multilingual Learners (MLL).

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify at least 3 best practices for ELL Students within Core Content Classes (Gen Ed and/or ENL)

  • Integrate these different tech tools into pre-existing plans and apply them into future planning and instruction

  • Design mini-lessons featuring each of these tech tools.

  • Design a unit plan for their own classes incorporating the theory and practice of this course.
