Teaching Core Content to ELL Students: Digital Resources for Equitable Learning and Scaffolding in Core Secondary Classes

$590.00

NEW COURSE for Summer 2026: July 6 - August 14

Register now for professional development hours! Registration for graduate-level credit opens June 1st, 2026.

Course Description

At the Secondary Level, there is an emphasis on summative assessment in order to move towards graduation requirements. For many content area teachers, or English as a New Language (ENL) teachers who are co-teaching in these classrooms, there is an increased challenge to provide equity in instruction while supplementing for gaps in language and background knowledge. There is also an issue with pacing to cover required curriculum that will be part of these high-stakes summative assessments. Within each module, participants will examine the principles and methodologies behind some practical strategies for supporting ELLs in core content areas. In addition, we will introduce various tech tools and some key components that will support our students in content learning and language inquisition. Conducted in English for all secondary teachers including teachers of English Language Learners (ELL), English Learners (EL), English as a New Language (ENL), English as a Second Language (ESL) and Multilingual Learners (MLL).

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Identify at least 3 best practices for ELL Students within Core Content Classes (Gen Ed and/or ENL)

  • Integrate these different tech tools into pre-existing plans and apply them into future planning and instruction

  • Design mini-lessons featuring each of these tech tools.

  • Design a unit plan for their own classes incorporating the theory and practice of this course.
