Social and Emotional Learning in the World Language Classroom

from $590.00

Course Description

Language students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. As a result, students within a class have many different needs. This course explores many strategies that allow teachers to meet a wide variety of student needs, including an effective feedback loop, collaborative organization, understanding how students learn, creating more equitable assessments, giving students opportunities for choice, and creating scaffolded tasks to work towards proficiency.  Teachers will come away with effective strategies and having designed activities and assessments that they can use immediately in their classes.

This course will explore creating meaning and understanding around what social and emotional learning (SEL) is, why it’s important and how to integrate it into the world language classroom. We will

  • define and develop and understanding of SEL as it relates to the world language classroom,

  • explore a variety of social and emotional learning (SEL) best practices,

  • research what experts are saying and doing today around SEL rationale and implementation, and

  • discuss and develop actionable new and tested strategies to integrate into the curriculum.

The focus of this course is for in-service world language teachers to identify, rationalize and strategize integrating SEL into everyday practice and the curriculum. We will do this in an asynchronous virtual setting via a variety of instructional technology applications. Conducted in English.
