Social and Emotional Learning in the World Language Classroom
from $590.00
Course Description
This course will explore creating meaning and understanding around what social and emotional learning (SEL) is, why it’s important and how to integrate it into the world language classroom. We will
define and develop and understanding of SEL as it relates to the world language classroom,
explore a variety of social and emotional learning (SEL) best practices,
research what experts are saying and doing today around SEL rationale and implementation, and
discuss and develop actionable new and tested strategies to integrate into the curriculum.
The focus of this course is for in-service world language teachers to identify, rationalize and strategize integrating SEL into everyday practice and the curriculum. We will do this in an asynchronous virtual setting via a variety of instructional technology applications. Conducted in English.
Course Rationale
According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions.
SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish learning environments and experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower young people and adults to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities.
